solution: intelligent information access, cultural asset management

OEDB was founded in 1937 under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education. Its main goal is the publication and distribution of educational books to the public schools in Greece and Cyprus and to Greek schools all over the world. Nowadays, OEDB publishes more than 1200 titles every year and serves about 10.000 schools, 120.000 teachers and 1.5 million students.

OEDB identified the need to distribute all its educational content in a direct and cost-effective manner. Furthermore, to make available its unique archive of historical editions of school books, going back to 1930. The initiative aimed to fulfil the information needs of the educational and research community and the general public. OEDB required an entire system (technological and organizational) that would manage the digital content lifecycle from digitization to personalized content delivery.

IMC Technologies set up a modern electronic library as the front end of the system. The library provides sophisticated information access services to the public, including natural language search, online dialogues for query refinement, context-based navigation, concept navigation in knowledge models and dynamic content viewing at different detail levels (book, chapter, paragraph). At the back office, an integrated system enables the digitization, OCR processing, storage, scientific annotation, classification and maintenance of the content. All the processes are managed via intuitive interfaces in a frictionless manner.

The key benefits can be summarized in the following:

  • Easy to use, state-of-the-art information access services for the public, achieving accuracy of results and speed of transaction.
  • Adaptation of search mechanisms to the user knowledge background.
  • Cost-effective management of the organization's entire digital content, historical and contemporary.
  • Seamless integration of online publication processes from digital content creation to web delivery.
